Common Solution #1 Using Sleep Medication

  • They usually have strong side effects like next-day grogginess; most are linked to long-term health issues and can become addictive with continuous use.
  • They “sedate” you, which is not REAL sleep. If someone came and knocked you over the head and you were passed out in the grass, it may look like you’re sleeping, but you’re not. This is what sleeping pills do. They just knock you out but it’s not real sleep, so we never feel truly rested.

Common Solution #2 Sleep Hygiene

Creating a set of strict rules, rituals and routines around sleep, hoping it will help you sleep.

  • The sleep “experts” say clean up your sleep hygiene! Avoid eating or using electronics after 7 PM, make your room cold, quiet, and dark, avoid sugar, caffeine, or alcohol, and start a bedtime routine.
  • Although some of these strategies can help increase the quality of your sleep, practicing sleep hygiene doesn’t solve insomnia, and it can actually be one of the things ensuring you stay stuck.
  • Because… all of these sleep rules start to feel restrictive and impossible to maintain. Stress hits, the mind begins to race and you’re unable to fall back to sleep.
  • The stricter the rules, the more pressure and stress it puts on you to sleep and the harder they are to follow, which only leads to feelings of failure and frustration.

Common Solution #3 Sleep App’s

Using sleep apps doesn’t solve insomnia.

  • Most CBT-I programs primarily focus on sleep being a problem not the cause of why you are not sleeping. They give you sleep hygiene advice and a technique called sleep restriction.
