Why Do I Have Insomnia?

Devin Burke, Sleep Science Academy founder and your guide to a better night’s sleep, answers the question, Do I Have Insomnia?

About Insomnia

If you believe you have insomnia, there are three different types to consider.

First is transient insomnia, which results from stress or jet lag. It can last for a few days to a week, and it’s something we all experience from time to time. Transient insomnia is widespread and not concerning.

Next is acute insomnia, which can last anywhere from one to several weeks. This form of insomnia can also result from significant stress like the death of a loved one, job loss, or similar events and is somewhat more severe than transient insomnia.

Acute insomnia can shift into the third and most serious form of chronic insomnia. Chronic insomnia can last for several weeks or even multiple years.

Difficulty getting or staying asleep three days a week and for more than three months indicates chronic insomnia.

Two Subtypes

The first subtype is onset insomnia which indicates trouble falling asleep. The second subtype is sleep maintenance insomnia, regarding difficulty staying asleep.

People often have both, or it may start as onset insomnia that turns into maintenance insomnia. But, depending on the night, it could be either or.

If you don’t get out of that stressful state and deal with transient insomnia, it can turn into acute insomnia, which can lead to a more challenging chronic condition.

How do you stop the cascade from transient insomnia to chronic?

The way to halt this troubling slide into chronic insomnia is a matter of getting out of, what I call, the sleep paradox;
